What turns of speech really get your goat?

Do you cringe everytime someone throws a "like" into their sentence, or tacks a "whatever" onto the end of everything they say?

To start off...

I can't stand the phrase "at the end of the day". The end of what day? What purpose does this phrase serve?

Also, when people add "you know" or "y'know" to the end of everything they say. What's the point, you know?

One other annoyance is when someone says "I could care less" when it should actually be "I couldn't care less." The first makes no sense!

Anyone got any speech pet peeves to share?

*guilty of the "like"* lol. I hate it when people say ain't. That really annoys me. Also I hate it when people pronounce the i in either and neither. I know it's not wrong but it just annoys me.

It annoys me when people tack an 's' onto the end of anyway, making it 'anyways'.

Yeah, text speak is something that really gets on my nerves (and shouldn't be done on a forum like this, for that matter! :D)

But as this is about speech...I dislike it when people bring text-speak over into spoken language.

My sister will often say 'lol' out loud, for example if someone says something funny, instead of laughing she will say 'lol'. It was amusing for the first few times, but now it's a bit annoying...

How about when people say "...you've got another thing coming!"

Ugh!

It's think, not thing! "...you've got another think coming!"

The first doesn't make sense, especially when you consider the phrase is usually preceded by something like "If you think you're going out dressed like that..."

I really hate it when people swear as every second word. Half the time I can't follow the sentance its extremly confusing. And when they add 'init' all the time. Its not even a word. Its isen't it. Argh.

And then when people miss letters out because they are too lazy like 'Wha yeh wan' which means What do you want. People learning english in different coutrys have better gramar than the british do *sighs*

I hate it when people drop the glottal stop - that's drop the 't' in words, so a word like 'butter' becomes 'bu'er'. Although I know I'm guilty of doing this on occasion, I dislike the way it makes people sound...

I think the glottal stop might be an English thing...it's very common in a lot of British accents to hear people dropping their t's.

I say bu'er and bu'on a lot. There are several speech traits that are common where I am from. Several people say worsh instead of wash or torlet instead of toilet.

Drownded or drownding is another I can't stand, as is drame for past tense of dream.

The woman I am living with now frequently exhibits all of these improper speech habits.

One I am guilty of that drives me crazy, but I can't stop it, is pronouncing measure as maysure. I don't do it with treasure or pleasure. I know it's a mispronunciation, but I can't break myself of it.

The town I live in is Valparaiso, pronounced Val-pa-rai-so. I used to be guilty of this before I moved here. A lot of people say Val-prai-so or Val-pri-so. My friend lives in Merrillville, pronounced Merr-ill-ville. A lot of people call it Maryville. And correct the people who live there.

I hate when people say irregardless. Not a word. It's just regardless. It's particularly annoying when people who are more educated than me use that "word".
