6. Explain how the poison from the Red Tide effects humans and animals.

7. List at least 5 different colours water will change with algae present.

8. How many different types of algae have known to cause severe deadly poisonings?

9. In what province in Canada are these deadly poisonings from?

10. Explain the symptoms of Shellfish poisoning by Red Tide and how it effects humans.

Part Two:~*Creative Time*~
Alright, so hereís your easy task for this homework assignment. Create a drawing of an algae (not the RED TIDE). It either can be a real one or one that you created. Please make sure that you create your drawing, as real pictures arenít allowed. A great program to use is the paint program. Just remember to be creative. After you have created your drawing please write a minimum of 100 to a maximum of 200 word essay on it by describing it's defences, enemy's and how it effects humans. The more detail the more points will be rewarded.

This is a dinoflagellate, a common single celled organism known for causing red tide blooms and for the mass break outs in shell fish bed poisonings. It's defenses are plates covering the entirety of the organism, giving extra structure and rigidity. Enemies of this single celled organism are the shell fish and krill that feed on them, as they are phytoplankton and first on the food chain. However they can be also considered an enemy to themselves, for they produce very toxin that is deadly to them. To stem this the dinoflagellate goes into a dormant or resting stage until living conditions are more suitable.

It's effect on humans can be deadly. Contact with this organism during a full bloom can cause dermatitis (severe itching and hiving of the skin). Sore throat, coughing, sneezing and watery or itching eyes are the most common symptoms reported. If ingested more severe and lethal exposure to shellfish poisoning can occur and can be fatal. This organism produced two main toxins: brevetoxins - neurotoxic shellfish poisoning (NSP) and saxitoxins - paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP). In the case of paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP), the toxin attacks the nervous system and causes paralysis. There is no known antidote; death occurs from asphyxiation or respiratory paralysis.

Part Two:~*Creative Time*~ PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF I CANNOT USE A PHOTOGRAPH IN THIS WAY. IF INCORRECT, I WILL CHANGE IT.

Pink Poxie spread in closed systems once one of their pink, sparkly spores has landed in a pond. Then, this spore separates the hydrogen and oxygen particles in the pond and consumes the oxygen particles, releasing these particles out of the lake into the air as heat and thus suffocating life in the closed system, who now cannot protect their environment and lose the battle against the Pink Poxie. Once the algae have absorbed all of the oxygen, the pond no longer exists Ė the algae have created a vat of liquid hydrogen. With no oxygen left to feed on, the algae particles move around faster, desperately trying to find more oxygen. This heat creates enough energy to bring the liquid hydrogen to its boiling point and allow it to be released as instable hydrogen gas. This volatile gas explodes with contact of more heat; as the algae continue to move around, the hydrogen gas receives enough heat to cause explosions fatal to humans in the surrounding area. Pink Poxie has no enemy except itself, for at the explosion of oxygen, the Pink Poxie dissipates, and the spores must be carried by the wind to the next pond they will destroy.

Virga dottia is incredibly similar in looks to gillyweed at first glance. However, once you get a closer look, it becomes clear that the two plants are quite different. Virga dottia Is covered with yellow spots connected with black stripes. It is these differences that actually provide the algae with its defense mechanisms. When it feels threatened, the Virga dottia will release a poisonous gas from the yellow dots spread intermittently about it. The gas from these dots temporarily stun the senses-eyes go blind, the nose canít smell, the ears canít hear, etc. The effect wears off after about one minute, after which the attacker while generally go away. If it doesnít get the message, however, the black stripes will poke out in short, sharp spikes. If anything from human to another alga comes in contact with these spikes, the part that touched the spike will become inflamed for three days unless treated. The enemies of the Virga dottia are the tadfoal-a young hippocampus-which likes to feed on the algae before its teeth growth in. The effect this algae has on humans if ingested is not deadly, but incredibly uncomfortable. Humans will get a sore throat and upset stomach for six hours, and then the illness usually passes. Humans are also affected by Virga dottiaís dangerous gas and spikes.

Part Two:~*Creative Time*~

This is a picture of the Pink crusted fire algae, which starts as a pink crust around the edge of the pond, slowly changing to a Green then orange then finally red. Once drop from this pond would be enough to kill you as it burns through your skin till reaching the blood stream which burns everything it touches, once it reaches your heart you will have a symptom similar to a heart attack were first your lungs stop working then your brain and finally your heart. The whole process would take less than an hour. The only animal that can survive is the sloth with has such thick hair that the algae cannot burn through it, the sloth can survive if eating the algae or affected plants.

lol that was...um fun.

Algenblack

Algenblack is a very rare but very deadly algae off of the cost of South Africa. Its only form of defense is from the hair like projections surrounding its body called their stingers. When an enemy gets near enough these creatures ďstingĒ them and inject a highly deadly poison. This poison does not harm fish but instead it enters into its blood where it is pumped throughout the body. Once the fish is consumed by humans the human who ate it will first get what they think it the flu. After a while they will loose feeling to their feet until this feeling travels up to their chest. By this time it is too late to save them because the poison is now causing their breathing to slow down until they slowly suffocate to death.

I made this up by playing around with some paint brushes on paint shop pro. The blue-green algae feeds off deceased organisms. Its body produces a safe, anti-toxin that cleans and purifies the water. It goes through photosynthesis only during the cold months as it needs a cooler temperature to reproduce its self. It lives only about ten years before it stops producing cells. It's bright colors are great for small fish to hide in and is perfectly fine to eat straight from the ocean.
